Lehigh's first snow day of the 2009-2010 year

Just a quick note before I really get going with reading applications (it is February after all). It's our ~4th snow storm of the winter (compared to the last few years when it never really felt like winter), and wow - this one seems to have actually really hit us. Most of the storms this year have been too far south or east, hitting Philadelphia and the state of NJ pretty hard and leaving us with a few inches of snow. But this one seems to be giving us a bit more than we can handle. Thus, the university closed today - a bit of a shocker in my book since it takes A LOT for that to happen. We have a great crew that cleans the walkways on campus, so normally it's just an issue of getting essential staff (professors, dining hall employees, etc.) to campus. It must be pretty bad out there. A quick thanks to all of those who make it in on a day like to support our students - you do great work and it is very much appreciated!!

The closing and the snow, though, is nothing I personally have to worry about. Despite the fact that the area schools and most businesses are closed, I can work from home. In fact, today I was supposed to anyway - reduces distractions so that we can read more applications. So other than having my husband at home, who enjoys bugging me so I'm sure it's going to be a really "fun" day (at least it's worth heating the whole house today, so I won't have to rely on my trusty space heater), it's status quo for me. *sigh* How things change.....A snow day means very little to me now.....these are the times when I realize I'm not a really big kid and instead am an adult - the days when I realize I'm no longer in high school in Upstate NY when we used to wear pjs inside out and backwards as a foolproof (ok maybe it didn't always work) way of getting a day off. Of course, back then, we would have school despite 6 inches of snow overnight...

Speaking of students - I'm sure the Lehigh students are enjoy their day off. ...this is when you can think about students being that cross between an adult and child. A snow day is nice when you are in college, but great when you attend Lehigh and you have a variety of hills to sled down - and oh yes, they will go out in force. I'm sure there will be a number of snowball fights and other fun in the snow, too. It's actually really endearing - they go from being such incredibly bright and hardworking growing adults to little kids just wanting to have some fun. I love it. I wish I lived closer to campus to witness some of their simple joy!

Ok that's it for now - once I go through some applications today I hope to post about my trip to New Mexico.

For those of you affected by snow: take a lesson from the Lehigh students -have fun! If you have to go out, please drive safely!

Oh New Mexico...what different weather that post contains...
